Narrative
On august 23, 2025, at approximately 3:12 pm, while conducting routine aerial patrols, the pilot observed a sheen coming from platform smi 288a. The pilot informed the local operation group and flew back to pick up an operations person. Once back on site and landed on the platform, operations confirmed that there was a small pin hole drip on the 4 riser pipeline and less than a gallon of oily water mixture had dripped in the gulf of america creating a sheen. The platform is currently deactivated and is scheduled to be decommissioned by the producer, and the pipeline is air-gapped on both ends and blinded off. There is zero pressure on the pipeline. On 8/26/25 operators placed a temporary containment wrap of absorbent pads and wax tap to stop the drip from hitting the water. To mitigate the leak; on 8/30/25 a hot tap clamp was installed several feet below the leak location and the fluids were drained and pipeline equalized below the leak location at the hot clamp location. The pipeline is scheduled to be flushed with sea water and abandoned. This will prevent future leaks.
