Narrative
On october 4 at approximately 09:50, consumers energy gas transmission employees were excavating to expose a wellhead for annular monitoring when they inadvertently struck an above-grade casing valve and nipple. This contact caused a leak at the nipple/wellhead interface of cranberry lake well c-243, located in summerfield township, clare county, michigan. Inspection revealed that the casing valve and nipple were compromised at the casing head. The site was immediately secured, and personnel ensured public safety by maintaining a safe perimeter. Following internal assessment, the situation was classified as a level one well control event, with contingency plans in place to escalate to level two if necessary. A third-party contractor was engaged to safely kill the well by pumping brine into the tubing to equalize pressure and stop gas flow. Once the well was confirmed to be safely killed, the damaged components were removed, the casing head threads were visually inspected, and a new valve and nipple were installed. The well remained out of service pending integrity verification and follow-up work. On october 28, consumers energy well services completed all required mechanical integrity testing. Normal operations resumed at 16:05.
