Narrative
On friday, july 25, 2025, at approximately 17:45, consumers energy gas control received multiple scada alarms indicating a potential failure at distribution regulator station 64-301, located at the intersection of marsh road and wildwood road in shelbyville, michigan (barry county). The controller promptly notified the on-call distribution regulation supervisor, who dispatched a gas mechanic to the site. At approximately 17:56, local emergency responders also notified the consumers energy security command monitoring center. Upon arrival, orangeville township fire department personnel observed smoke coming from the building. Using thermal detection equipment, they recorded internal temperatures reaching up to 800f. At approximately 18:05, an ignition occurred, resulting in a fire and subsequent explosion. Although informed that company personnel were enroute, the fire department proceeded to remove the valve locks and manually closed the inlet (valve g) and outlet (valve h) valves, successfully isolating gas flow to the station by approximately 18:10. After extinguishing the fire, the fire department cooled the facility with water to ensure safe access for inspection. Consumers energy electric personnel then de-energized the remote terminal unit (rtu) cabinet to isolate electrical service. Gas mechanics and a gas service worker conducted a leak investigation in the surrounding area, performed a visual inspection of the station, and secured it by locking and tagging the valves in accordance with safety protocols. No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the incident. A multidisciplinary team has been assembled to investigate the root cause and contributing factors. A final report will be issued upon completion of the investigation.
