Narrative
On january 19, 2025, tc energy confirmed an unintentional gas release at the lost river compressor station in mathias, west virginia, after a landowner reported a potential issue. Upon arrival, operations personnel observed natural gas being released to the atmosphere and confirmed the failure at 1801 est. Gas control reported a pressure drop from approximately 700 psi to 550 psig. The failure was traced to esd blow-off valve c10-90, which opened out of sequence due to below freezing ambient atmospheric temperatures, causing a pressure drop in the compressed air system. Operations manually isolated the valve by closing upstream fire valve c10-314, stopping the gas release at 1804 est. Gas control confirmed pipeline wb5 was at 502 psig at the time. The failed valve was removed, tested, and successfully cycled before being reinstalled. Tc energy will assess mitigation measures to prevent recurrence.
