Narrative
Midamerican energy responded to a gas leak call at 15 north 12th street in fort dodge, iowa at 16:53 on january 21, 2024. Initial investigation did not find the source of the leak and barholing and interior investigations in the area continued for the next 6 hours with no pinpointed source. They main was exposed and crews continued to monitor and check gas levels in and around the buildings in the area. The location of the explosion did not have a gas reading the night of the 21st. While continuing to investigate for the leak on the morning of the 22nd of january, natural gas in a nearby stripmall at 33 north 12 street gas ignited with a flash fire and the interior of the mall was damaged by an explosion. The source of the gas was a leak on a 2" main. The main was was abandoned in-place and a replaced by a bored in plastic main. The gas that exploded is thought to have migrated into the stripmall over night.
