Narrative
Nustar's control room identified a flow rate deviation on its alon ic lateral and dispatched nustar operations personnel to investigate the deviation. Upon arrival, the operator discovered a crude oil release on pump 10 inside nustar's big spring terminal, and immediately isolated the pump. A vacuum truck was used to remove the released crude oil, and clean-up activities were initiated. The leak originated from the seal on pump 10, and the pump was removed from service and replaced. The contributing cause(s) of the seal failure is under investigation. Update - the failed pump was sent to a third party for examination. After disassembly and inspection of the pump, it was apparent that the thrust bearing failed, which allowed for separation of the mechanical seal on the pump.
