Narrative
On november 12, 2022 at 2:59 am cst, the edmonton control center received a seal fail alarm on unit 3 at moorefield station and the unit was locked out. At 3:29 am cst the edmonton control center received a sump alert and the moorefield station was shut down and isolated. An on-call technician was called out to investigate the alarm. At 4:30 am cst technician arrived at moorefield station and discovered approximately 10 gallons of crude oil had been released in the pump building. The source of the release was identified as a seal on the unit 3 pump. Additional resources arrived on site for cleanup and repairs. The majority of product was contained within the pump building on the concrete floor with a small amount that migrated out of the building and onto the gravel. All product was cleaned up and less than one cubic yard of contaminated soil was removed and properly disposed of. The investigation determined the cause of the release was due to normal wear and tear of the seal from years of service. The seal was replaced and unit 3 was returned to service.
