On july 9, 2022, at approximately 08:30 cst, kinder morgan crude and condensate (PHMSA opid #23678) local operations personnel received a telephone call from a landowner stating they smelled a petroleum odor near mainline block valve 90 located in wharton county tx, near the town of wharton. Local operations personnel contacted houston control center (hcc) to shut down the pipe. Operations personnel then began to travel to the reported location. Upon arrival at 09:20, crude oil was witnessed spilling from the interface system pump. The failed pump was isolated and the oil spill response plan was initiated. Based on an initial estimate, 69 gallons of crude oil released, the railroad commission of tx was notified telephonically at 09:58. The contracted osro arrived and began remediation activities. The gps coordinates were incorrect and updated on 9.8.22 at 0915. The failed pump was shipped to the manufacturer for failure analysis. The cause of the failure was determined to be failed snap rings. September 2022 update: total volume release updated from 69 gallons to 13 barrels. June 2024 update: submitting final report with administrative changes.
