Narrative
On october 20th, 2022 at 8:28am, a southern natural gas (sng) technician was manually operating a valve contactor on the discharge side of unit 4 at the gallion compressor station. While the technician was operating the valve contactor, a neighboring check valve caught fire. Immediately the technician initiated the station emergency shutdown to isolate the station. The station was isolated at 8:55am. The technician on site sustained burns requiring treatment in a medical facility but not requiring overnight in-patient hospitalization. The event was determined to be non-reportable, and the internal incident investigation commenced. On october 26th, 2022, after investigating the incident further, data indicated that additional gas was vented due to a faulty check valve located in the valve pneumatic system which did not seal properly leading to additional gas volume released. Therefore, the incident was deemed reportable and reported to the nrc. In order to prevent reoccurrence sng operations will be replacing all gallion station pneumatic system check valves.
