Narrative
On november 4, 2022, at approximately 15:29 hours consumers energy received notification of a natural gas pipeline damage at the intersection of n. Elm avenue and rosehill road, jackson (jackson county) michigan. A gas service worker (gsw) was dispatched and arrived onsite at approximately 15:55 hours. The gsw confirmed a third-party contractor performing roadway excavation work damaged a natural gas pipeline, which was later determined to be a 6-inch steel medium pressure pipeline. Police and fire departments were onsite and assisted the contractor with road closure to ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicle traffic. No fatalities or injuries occurred because of the damage and subsequent natural gas release. A distribution crew arrive onsite at approximately 16:15 hours and developed a plan to isolate and arrest the blowing gas. The damaged segment was isolated by installing a pressure control fitting at a remote location east of the damage and squeezing the pipeline at a location west of the damage. The blowing gas was contained at approximately 04:30 hours (november 5, 2022) and a permanent repair was completed by welding an encapsulated fitting around the damaged segment. Repairs were completed and normal operations resumed on november 5, 2022, at approximately 10:30 hours. Service restoration for all impacted customers began after the pipeline repair.
