Narrative
At approximately 3:30 am on saturday, october 5, 2019, a side-by-side atv struck an above-grade facility at a remote location on a high pressure distribution main resulting in an unintentional release of natural gas. There were no injuries requiring inpatient hospitalization or fatalities. At approximately 5:00 am, homes in cornplanter and along state route 8 were evacuated, under the direction of the cornplanter township volunteer fire department, until the situation was made safe around 9:00 am. During this time, a national fuel field service representative monitored air quality at nearby homes to ensure that there was no danger to public safety. Investigation into the incident revealed the impact to the above-grade facility caused a 2" riser to separate from a below-grade 2" valve resulting in a leak. All above-grade facilities were removed as part of the repair.
