Narrative
On 7/10/2017 at 13:29, national grid dispatch received call for a hit main. Cb utilities was trenching for install of their water main and hit with a backhoe a national grid marked 3 inch gas main that was dead ended and capped off. The contractor hit the dresser end cap with the backhoe and pulled cap off resulting in blowing gas from national grid's 3 inch, 60# gas main. During pipe repair process 310 customers were shut off. After main repair we restored all 310 customers affected. The gas main was appropriately marked prior to excavation, but the contractor failed to maintain marks as their spoil pile was covering the marks for the stub that was hit. National grid had the c+m crew clear out the spoil pile from the area of the damage and marks were found for the stub and were accurate in regards to the stub location. There were no national grid personnel on site at the time of the incident
