The release occurred on the suction side piping of the number 1 pump unit at the kansas city station. A thermal relief valve on the suction side piping failed to activate causing thermal build up of pressure which caused a gasket on a strainer to leak. The pump unit where the release occurred was idle at the time of the release. The defective device was removed and a new relief valve was installed in its place. A new strainer gasket was also installed. Approximately 1.3 cubic yards of impacted soil was remediated. No nrc report was required
