Narrative
At approximately 2:30pm on friday, march, 21 2014, two employees noticed a petroleum smell in the air at maxbass station, and upon a station check, discovered oil inside the berm where a tank was removed from service in 2009. Piping in the vicinity of the visible oil was isolated, locked and tagged out. Investigation and recovery efforts began immediately. On may 28, 2014, an additional volume of oil was discovered while excavating abandoned piping at which time the recovered quantity was estimated at 36 barrels. Upon further sub-surface investigation, an additional quantity of oil was discovered bringing the total amount to approximately 200 barrels. An estimated 1300 cubic yards of contaminated soil attributed to this release was removed from the site. Effected pipe was sent in for third party metallurgical analysis and the cause was determined to be microbial induced corrosion (mic). The repair costs include removing the abandoned piping from the release site.
