Narrative
On march 23, 2011, a 16 inch steel natural gas supply line was damaged by mechanized grading equipment. As a result of this damage, portions of the 22 freeway were temporarily closed. The facilities had been properly located and marked in response to a USA request. Upon further investigation, it was learned that excavator did not indicate to socalgas employee that any excavating would be taking place over the 16 inch pipeline. As a result, no standby was taking place at time of damage. Pressure was lowered in section of damaged pipeline. Repairs were completed with no gas ignition and no injuries. No customers were out of service. This incident became reportable to PHMSA when estimates of damage cost and gas lost met reporting criteria. This incident was also reported to the california public utilities commission.
